My name is Katie F and I’m a Level II Doctoral Occupational Therapy Student from Widener University in Chester, Pennsylvania. I feel incredibly grateful for the opportunity to complete my fieldwork at Sundance Outdoor Therapy and to learn from experienced therapists in a unique nature-based and animal-assisted environment.
Before this placement, I had limited exposure to equine-assisted therapy. During a previous Level I experience at an equine-assisted facility, I was first introduced to the therapeutic benefits horses offer, particularly for children with unique sensory processing needs. Still, my knowledge of equine care and behavior was minimal.
When I first arrived at Sundance, I was both excited and a bit overwhelmed by how much there was to learn- not just about the therapy process, but about the horses themselves. However, as the weeks progressed, I grew more confident and comfortable in the barn environment. I began to see the horses not only as therapy partners but as sentient beings with thoughts and feelings of their own. This connection, especially during my time at the Elizabeth location, was instrumental in building my confidence and therapeutic skills.
Through this experience, I’ve gained a new appreciation for the role of equine partners in occupational therapy. The therapeutic process is truly a team effort: clients, therapists, horses, and volunteers all working in harmony to support growth, healing, and safety. I’ve learned just as much from the horses as I have from the people around me, and that collaborative spirit is something I will carry with me into both my professional and personal life.
I’m thankful for the many lessons and experiences Sundance has provided, and I look forward to applying what I’ve learned in my future as an occupational therapist.
